Es la primera vez que regresamos a un país en el mismo viaje. La época de lluvias en los Andes fue la excusa perfecta para volver y visitar otros tantos sitios que nos quedaron pendientes el año pasado. No ha habido grandes novedades, conocíamos bien el terreno así que podemos decir que ha sido como coser y cantar.
Un vuelo barato con la indeseable Frontier Airlines nos llevó a Denver, Colorado. Volver a los Estados Unidos tras nuestro paso por Centroamérica conlleva muchos cambios. Aunque adoramos el calor humano latino, encontrar caminos apenas poblados nos proporcionó una enorme burbuja de aire fresco. Esta es una “necesidad” que hemos ido descubriendo con el paso del tiempo. Acampar en la naturaleza, despertarte con silencio o con el sonido de ciervos pastando cerca, contemplar paisajes sin gentes, buscar rastro de animales, detenerte en ciudades solo para comprar comida, en definitiva, empaparte de la vida tranquila es algo que echábamos mucho de menos. Y para eso Estados Unidos es un gran país.
Asistimos a nuevos e inolvidables encuentros y la ruta nos lleva a vivir uno de los sueños de infancia de Evelin: visitar el parque nacional de Yellowstone. Hacerlo en agosto no es la mejor idea pero tocó así. Tuvimos muy mala suerte con el tiempo, aunque al menos algunas mañanas pudimos disfrutar del sol. Ese sitio es increíble. Vimos muchos ciervos, alces, bisontes, águilas, pero… solo un oso! Para osos mejor Canadá...
Nos atrajo mucho la idea de pasar por las Ghost towns (pueblos fantasmas). En la fiebre del oro de mediados del siglo XIX, Montana sufrió un boom. Pero un día el oro desapareció y con él miles y miles de mineros. Los pueblos que nacieron de la noche a la mañana se quedaron vacíos. Nosotros pensábamos que seguirían así, que serían verdaderos pueblos fantasmas. Pero no. En Estados Unidos tienen esa gran afición de restaurar sus edificios más viejos o históricos, y lo hacen a lo Hollywood, como si fueran decorados, muy bonitos pero nada creíbles.

Y a nivel persona yo, Aitor, cambié de década. Añadí un cuatro a mi currículum. A lo largo del viaje hemos asistido a gente cumpliendo los 40 y es universal que esta fecha sea “especial”. A la gente le gusta celebrarla de una manera diferente. Nosotros lo celebramos en un miserable pueblo, acampados detrás de una heladería para protegernos del maldito viento. No hubo lujos en la mesa y a la noche faltó champagne. Nunca pensé que a los 40 mi vida iba a ser así, quizás ese es fue mi mejor regalo.
Los días pasan rápido por las montañas de Colorado, las llanuras ventosas de Wyoming o los sube y bajas de Montana. En Missoula conocimos las instalaciones de Adventure Cycling Association, pioneros promoviendo el uso de la bici como forma de viaje y Missoula se unió al reducido club de ciudades donde no nos importaría vivir un día. Y afortunadamente tenemos la oportunidad de visitar buenos amigos que hicimos el año pasado en la carretera. Judy y Marty nos rescataron una horrible noche de Utah cuando el viento estaba a punto de llevarse nuestra tienda con nosotros dentro. Hicimos bien en aceptar su invitación de desmontar el campamento y pasar la noche en el confort de su motorhome. De esta forma nació nuestra amistad. Les visitamos en su Olympia natal y con ellos pasaremos muy buenos momentos por Washington, Oregón y norte de California.

Pero esa es otra historia…

Ey! Estamos de vuelta!!!!!

Qué bueno ha sido volver a sentir la soledad...

Qué bueno ha sido volver a estos típicos paisajes de carreteras infinitas y ... vacío

También echábamos mucho de menos el poder acampar con tranquilidad...

... aunque a veces estar protegidos del viento sea más importante que la posibilidad de volar por los aires si acampas junto a una tienda de fuegos artificiales...

Volvemos a estos típicos barrios que pensábamos solo existían en las películas...

A veces también nos parece volver atrás unas décadas en el tiempo...

Miles de latinos trabajan los campos, como Modesto, venido del Perú para cuidar rebaños en las solitarias montañas de Colorado. Tiene su rifle por los osos...

La Divisoria Continental es la cadena montañosa que atraviesa el país de norte a sur. Los ríos que caen hacia el oeste mueren en el Pacífico. Los que caen hacia el este mueren en el Atlántico

Silbando se pedalea mejor...

... aunque haya veces que no den muchas ganas... Momento histórico: cruzamos el paralelo 45, estamos a la misma distancia del Ecuador que del Polo Norte!

Como el resto de los cientos de viajeros que pasan cada año por el cuartel general de Adventure Cyclist Association en Missoula, a nosotros tamién nos hicieron la foto de rigor y nos dieron el rico helado de almendras...qué maravilla de sitio!

Fecha histórica: 40 años y con ganas de seguir dando guerra

It is the first time that we go back to a country during the same trip. The rainy season in the Andes was the perfect excuse to go back and visit many places we did not manage to see last year. No big news, we knew the country well so we can say that it has been as easy as pie.

A cheap flight with the not recommendable Frontier Airlines brought us to Denver, Colorado. To go back to the USA after cycling through Central America involves many changes. Even if we adore the Latin human warmth, to encounter scarcely populated roads was like a breath of fresh air. This is a “necessity” that we discovered as time goes by. To camp in the nature, to wake up in silence or with the sound of deer grazing near to us, to observe landscape without people, to look for animals, to stop in cities only to stock up on groceries, in other words, to soak up peaceful life was something that we really missed. And for this, the USA is a great country.

Again we had some unforgettable encounters on the road and our itinerary made one of Evelin´s childhood dreams come true: to visit Yellowstone National Park. To do this in August was not the best idea but there was no other choice. We had bad luck with the weather, even if at least some mornings we could enjoy the sun. This place is incredible. We saw many deer, elks, bison, eagles but…only one bear! Canada is much better if you want to see bears...

We were really excited about cycling through Ghost towns. During the gold rush in the middle of the 19th century, Montana experienced a boom. But one day the gold disappeared and so did thousands and thousands of miners. Towns which had born in an eye blink ended up empty. We thought that they still would be empty, that they would really be Ghost towns, but they were not. In the USA they have this great passion about restoring their oldest or historic buildings and they do it in a Hollywood style, as if they would be movie sets, very nice but not believable.

And personally speaking I, Aitor, changed of decade. I added a four to my CV. During the trip we met various people who were turning 40 and it is universal that this date is “special”. People like to celebrate it in a different way. We celebrated it in a miserable town, camped behind an ice creamery to protect ourselves from the damned wind. There were no great luxuries on the table and at night there was no champagne. I never thought that at 40 my life would be like this, maybe this was the best possible present.

Days go by fast through the Colorado Mountains, the windy Wyoming plains or the rolling hills of Montana. In Missoula we visited the Adventure Cycling Association, pioneers in promoting the use of bicycles as a way of travelling. Missoula became part of the restricted club of cities were we would like to live one day. Luckily we had the opportunity to visit some good friends that we met on the road last year. Judy and Marty saved us from a miserable night in Utah when the wind was about to lift our tent away with us inside. We are happy we accepted their invitation to take down camp and spend the night in their comfortable motor home. This is how our friendship started. We visited them in their home town Olympia and we had a good time with them in Washington, Oregon and Northern California.

But this is another story…

Hey! We are back!!!!!

It´s been so great to feel the solitude again...

It´s been so great to enjoy these typical lonely and infinite roads again...

We also missed the tranquility of a safe camping

... although sometimes we camped in weird and unsafe spots like this one next to a fireworks stand. But we were protected from the wind, and this was worth the risk!

Again we see neighborhoods that we thought only existed in movies...

Sometimes we seem to go back several decades in time...

Thousands of latinos work in the fields, like Modesto, hired and brought from Perú as a sheepherder in the lonely mountains of Colorado. He has a rifle for bears...

Is there anyone out there?

We get excited again when entering bear country...

The Continental Divide is the mountain range that crosses the Country from North to South. Rivers which go West flow into the Pacific Ocean. The ones which go East flow into the Atlantic Ocean

Whistling you cycle better...

... although sometimes we don´t feel like whistling... Historic moment: we cross the 45th parallel, we are halfway between Equator and North Pole!

Like the other hundreds of touring cyclists who every year pass through the headquarter of the Adventure Cyclist Association in Missoula, we also were taken a picture and given an almond ice cream....what a wonderful place!
