6. Bye Bye USA

Otra etapa que se va y otro buen recuerdo que nos llevamos. Para nosotros, europeos, los Estados Unidos no es un país que a priori atraiga mucho. Su política internacional es, en nuestra opinión, uno de los grandes males que tiene el mundo. Su consumo desorbitado y derroche de energía hacen de ellos el mayor responsable del calentamiento global y por tanto, del deterioro de este planeta que nos pertenece a todos. Es un país donde se necesita mucho dinero para todo. Aquel que tenga la desgracia de perder el trabajo y no pueda permitirse pagar un seguro médico está con grandes probabilidades de arruinarse de por vida si tiene la mala suerte de contraer una enfermedad o tener un mal accidente. Vivir así es vivir bajo la espada de Damocles. Es junto a Japón el país de la vida dedicada al trabajo y el capitalismo y esto es lo que tiene, si se tiene bien y si no se tiene, que te den… no es un país fácil para vivir.

Pero lo que los europeos (y no europeos) deberíamos saber es que los Estados Unidos son mucho más que eso. También hay mucha gente crítica que quiere cambiar el rumbo de su país, y hacerlo desde dentro es aún más difícil…

Paisajísticamente hablando es impresionante. Hemos recorrido solo el interior del oeste, aquel más montañoso y a la vez desértico; aquel donde se ubican espectaculares parques nacionales donde se rebosa Naturaleza pura. Pero sin duda la mayor sorpresa que nos hemos llevado en este inmenso país ha sido la gente de “a pie”;  gente cercana, amable y para estar en el primer mundo, muy generosa. Y esto ha hecho que hayamos disfrutado mucho y que haya despertado en nosotros una enorme curiosidad y ganas de profundizar mucho más en conocer sus gentes y su sociedad.

Another part of our trip has gone and we have one wonderful memory more to carry. For us Europeans, the USA is not a country that attracts much. Their international affairs are, in our opinion, one of the biggest disgraces of the world. Due to their extreme consumerism and energy waist, USA is the main responsible of global warming and therefore of the destruction of this planet, which is ours as well. They are a country where you need a lot of money for everything. A person who unfortunately loses the job and cannot afford to pay a medical insurance has a good chance to get bankrupt in case of sickness or accident. To live like this means to live under the sword of Damocles. Like Japan, the USA is a country dedicated to work and that´s what it brings - if you have money ok, if you don´t, you are screwed...it is not an easy country to live in.
But what we Europeans (and not only) should know is that the USA are much more than that. There are also many critic people who want to change the way of their country, and to do it from inside is even more difficult...
Landscape wise it is a stunning country. We only cycled a little part of the west, crossing mountains, desert and spectacular national parks placed in pure nature. But without any doubt our biggest surprise has been the common people: warm, lovely, and, for being citizens of the “first world”, very generous. That is why we enjoyed so much the USA and are ready for a next visit. We are determined to gain a deeper knowledge of its people and society.
